“We didn’t know that we were teaching incorrect theology!” —Conference attendee, denomination leader
The government in DR Congo is requiring church pastors to have a degree in theology in order to pastor a church.
Background:
Up to 80% of pastors and church leaders in Eastern Congo have received no formal theological training. As a result, some have taught unorthodox theology. TransformDRC staff are working to correct this problem by inviting pastors and church leaders, including men and women from different denominations, to acquire a certificate in Biblical Leadership Training that consists of 12 courses.
After attendees complete all 12 courses, they will receive a certificate that is recognized as a Degree in Biblical Leadership Training from the Theological University for Training and Orientation in Ministry based in Kenya.
TransformDRC Actions:
In the midst of war and an Ebola outbreak, the TransformDRC team continued teaching their Biblical Leadership Training curriculum to 60 pastors and women leaders over the last six months. They are more than halfway through the 12-session curriculum. Some of the topics covered so far this year included an Overview of Old and New Testaments, Leadership Development, Mentoring, Trauma Healing, and Conflict Resolution & Peacebuilding.
Results:
Those completing the courses will have the training and credentials required to lead their congregation and ministries.
The participants—some of whom are leaders in their denominations—expressed deep gratitude for the teachings, saying they learned things they had never known before.
